Head to the Yorkshire Dales to find some proper roads
"As I discovered when I used to live in the area, the choices here are endless. Continue north and you pass The Sun Inn as a possible lunch stop, before a tricky complex of curves that skirt farm buildings. Follow it to the end and you reach the A59 Skipton Road, beyond which is Pateley Bridge and the Nidderdale area, an hors d’oeuvre to the full Dales experience. "
The Dolomites are some incredible driving roads
"Starting in Corvara and heading south, you dive straight into the tightly packed hairpins of the Passo Campolongo, which have a ski lift running overhead. This leads you to Arabba, where you head west for the Passo Pordoi. The Gardena pass is arguably the prettiest of the lot (although they’re all stunning). At just 32.5 miles it might not sound like a very long loop, but the road never seems to run straight or flat so you’re constantly busy. Add in the relentlessly changing but always mesmerising views of the South Tyrol and it’s an absolute gem."

"I’m beginning to realise that the Route Napoléon is many roads in one. Its sheer scale and variety mean that a new landscape and new challenge is never more than moments ahead of you. Having descended into a valley, the road has been ironed flat with lush fields either side of us, the dotted white line in the centre aiming at the next summit like the sights on a pistol. There’s no traffic for miles..."
